Definitions

Community Service Hours – Community Service hours may be earned by students completing community service with and/or outside LSAMP. Community service is defined as any volunteering experience that students complete without personal financial gain.

Community Service hours are often an expectation/requirement for students wishing to matriculate into graduate/professional school (e.g., medical school). Having frequent/longstanding volunteer commitments and relationships is additionally beneficial to both personal and professional goals, relationships, and opportunities.

  • Helper Helper - Hours should be logged in Helper Helper, the University of Louisville’s Official Partnered App for finding, managing, and tracking volunteer hours: https://app.helperhelper.com/login. Hours are only approved if attendance has been verified. If you cannot log on Helper Helper, hours will be accepted into our Participation and Involvement form.
    • Students are granted access via their ULINKID@louisville.edu. Students must request a password to access their account.

Academic Support Services – Academic Support Service hours may be earned by students receiving tutoring support. Tutoring support may be received from a variety of sources, including, but not limited to: REACH, SI Sessions, Writing Center, Math Lab, Physics Lab, and Professor Office Hours.

REACH (Resources for Academic Achievement) allows you to get the most out of your courses with their free, academic support programs. Take advantage of services such as Academic Coaching, Peer Tutoring, Peer Assisted Learning, Structured Learning Assistance, Workshops, and Tips and Tools. REACH offers a support for a wide variety of STEM courses through Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), Structured Learning Assistance (SLA), the Learning Resource Center (LRC), Math Resource Center, Ekstrom Tutoring Center, and the Academic & Leadership Center in JB Speed.

LSAMP Staff gathers a report from REACH staff on Reading Day each semester of hours LSAMP scholars have attended over the academic semester. It is the scholar's responsibility to request edits to REACH hours gathered by LSAMP Staff. Other Academic Support Services must submit a verification of attendance by uploading documentation in the “Verification Upload Note” of each semester’s Participation/Involvement Form.

Academic Support Services are integral for success in academics. There are many opportunities to earn Academic Support hours at the University of Louisville, all of which we encourage you to utilize.

We encourage that you build good foundations for academic work as an underclassman (freshman/sophomore) as they will provide the basis for your undergraduate GPA, therefore enhancing your application to graduate/professional school as an upperclassman (junior/senior).

Personal/Professional Development – Personal and Professional Development hours may be earned by students attending outside events/workshops/meetings aligned with LSAMP goals. Many events may qualify one for personal/professional development, and LSAMP program staff will communicate additional opportunities to students on a regular basis. Opportunities may include, but are not limited to: REACH Seminars, Department Seminars, Advisor Meetings, and Career Fairs. Students unsure about if an event may qualify for personal/professional development are encouraged to inquire with LSAMP Staff.

Verification of attendance to these events must be uploaded in the “Verification Upload Note” of each semester’s Participation/Involvement Form.

Personal and Professional Development opportunity are important for all students to explore throughout their academic career! It is important for you to understand yourself, your values, and your goals so that you can continually adapt to new and changing work, environments, and situations.

Ongoing professional development can help you explore new futures, build new skills, and connect with mentors and individuals to further your career.

  • CITI/iRIS Training - CITI stands for Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Through CITI's website, individuals at UofL have access to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Privacy training. Requests and approvals for conducting human subjects research are made through iRIS, the approval system for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at UofL.

A required component of eligibility for the LSAMP stipend (any stipend amount) for juniors and seniors is completion of CITI training and/or iRIS training. Both components are important trainings for any individual doing healthcare/science research.

LSAMP Events – LSAMP Events constitute any event LSAMP program staff coordinates. Such events can take the form of meetings, workshops, and field trips. Required events such as LSAMP Kickoffs, KY-WV Symposium Attendance, and Director Panels also qualify for LSAMP event credit.

Meeting with LSAMP Staff: Students are asked to meet with an LSAMP student coordinator each semester to gain a stipend. An initial meeting with a student coordinator does not count for any type of event credit. Additional meetings with a student coordinator may qualify for Personal/Professional Development Credit. Meetings with Program Directors may also qualify a student for Personal/Professional Development credit.

Mandatory Events

Students must attend at least four (4) in-person/synchronous events a semester, including attendance at one (1) Kickoff event each academic year.

Two (2) external events are considered mandatory each year, the KY-WV Annual Research Symposium, and the LSAMP Director visit.

Students must gain an excused absence from LSAMP Staff if not in attendance. Excused absences may be granted for academic and workplace conflicts, as well as other extenuating circumstances. Students are encouraged to RSVP early and often to their desired events on Engage and communicate questions and concerns with program staff as soon as possible.

Failure to attend mandatory events must be made-up by the student via a write-up and assignment. Consistent failure to adhere to program policy may result in a reevaluation of stipend distribution and/or a student’s dismissal from the program.
