Shades
Registered Student Organization for LGBT Students of Color
Dedicated to empowering LGBT students of color, Shades includes both support for those who want to connect with helpful others, and public advocacy for out members who want to work on all forms of racism and homophobia on campus.
When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," he was explaining the way different expressions of prejudice tend to intersect. Students who live at the intersection of race and sexuality often find themselves battling more than one "ism" and the struggle can be difficult, to say the least.
We are a group that recognizes and supports diversity and intersectionality, especially those of gender, sexuality, and race. We welcome all students of color who identify as LGBT and their allies to join our group.
Meetings are a mix of informal gatherings and (for those who choose to participate) larger campus events that bring attention to the experience of LGBT people of color.
