LGBT Center celebrates the addition of over 250 names to the faculty & staff Ally List, launches improved resource
Update: Since the publication of this article on August 1, 2017 over 100 names have been added to the list, making the new total over 350 since January 2017.
The LGBT Center recently posted an updated version of its Ally List, a resource for current and prospective students, faculty, and staff that includes the names of advocates across campus. The list, originally launched in 2009, includes university faculty and staff who have pledged to be supportive allies to those LGBTQ+ or questioning their identity. It includes more than 700 names, and the Center has added at least 250 new ones since January.
Faculty and staff who are interested in adding their name can access the list and instructions for joining here.
One new student said, "It's nice to know that there are so many faculty and staff on our campus who care about showing their support. I am an engineering student and at first, I wasn’t sure how many of my professors would be accepting of my identity as an LGBTQ+ person. I was happy to see that many of the faculty and staff that I see every week had added their names to this list! It means a lot.”
LGBT Center staff member Katy Garrison said the updates will allow readers to use the list more easily. Now in PDF form with a more readable layout, it provides a powerful symbol of support to those who are seeking reassurance. “It's been so inspiring to see the enthusiasm from deans and other department leaders across campus who have been inviting their colleagues to sign on. So much of the progress we've made would not have been possible without advocacy coming from all corners of our campus."
