Clothing

Each country has different cultural norms. Therefore, clothing expectations will be discussed during the six-week orientation prior to departure. Some items used in all countries may include (please review the dress code specifications for each country):

  • T-shirts
  • Loose fitting cotton shirts
  • Light colored cotton pants (khakis) and/or shorts
  • Swimsuits
  • Comfortable tennis shoes, sandals, hiking shoes, and/or "wet" shoes
  • Sunglasses (polarized if possible)
  • Hat with a wide brim (protection from the tropical sun or rain)

Leave your 'good' jewelry and watches at home because you will not need them. If you must have a watch, wear an inexpensive one that is suitable for all activities.

Money

Currencies:

  • Belize - Dollar (BZ$)
  • Ghana - Cedi (GHS)
  • Philippines - Philippine Peso (PHP)
  • Trinidad/Tobago - Dollar (TTD)
  • South Africa - Rand (ZAR)
  • South Korea - Won (KRW)
  • Croatia - Kuna (HRK)

How much should I bring? -  We suggest $200 US

Note: All meals and transportation will be provided; however, if you will be purchasing souvenirs or additional food items you may want to bring extra money. It is easy to exchange currency. It is always best to travel with small denominations ($1's, $5's and $20's). Many ATMs will not accept foreign (US) bank cards; however, they may accept major credit cards. Remember that you represent the US and the University of Louisville, so do not embarrass yourself and your colleagues. Upscale restaurants, bars, and clubs are likely to expect a tip - 10%-15% is the current acceptable rate. Cash or major credit cards are often accepted.
