Research Team

Bradford Hill Lab Members

Deanna DavisZimple Kurlawala, M.D. Ph.D. M.P.Hjoined the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2021. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Louisville-Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2017.

She has a progressive educational background in basic, clinical and social sciences with a keen interest in processes involved in aging. She has previously worked on cancer biology, neurodegeneration, and premature aging disorders.

After postdoctoral work at the National Institute of Aging, she returned to Louisville and is currently studying metabolic and immunological changes associated with cardiovascular aging in response to PM2.5 and other environmental and genetic stimuli.

Kyle FulghumKyle Fulghum, M.S., joined the Diabetes and Obesity Center at UofL as a research technician in 2016. He is an alumnus of Evangel University where he graduated with a B.S. in Biological Chemistry and an alumnus of Missouri State University where he graduated with a M.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology.

He is currently a graduate student in physiology who joined the Hill Lab in 2018.

His research interests include exercise and his work involves in vivo stable isotope metabolomics to assess how metabolism regulates cardiac growth.

Pawel LorkiewiczPawel Lorkiewicz, Ph.D., is an alumnus of the University of Louisville.

He has developed critical methods for measuring metabolism using stable isotope metabolomics and has contributed to numerous studies in the Hill laboratory.

Daniel NguyenDaniel Nguyen, B.S., joined the Diabetes and Obesity Center at UofL in 2021. He is an alumnus of the University of New England, where he graduated with a B.S. in Applied Exercise Science.

He is currently an MD/PhD student in the Department of Physiology. His research interests include understanding the mechanisms of hypertension-induced cardiac fibrosis and discerning how fibroblast signaling influences fibroblast metabolism and function in the heart.

Collin Wells, B.S.joined the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2020. He is a recent graduate of Centre College with a bachelors in biochemistry and molecular biology.

He is currently a graduate student in biochemistry who joined the Hill lab in 2020.

His work is focused on metabolic changes in the heart that affect cardiovascular cell phenotype and biosynthetic pathway activity.

Helen Collins

Helen Collins, Ph.D., joined the University of Louisville School of Medicine as faculty in 2019.

She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Environmental Medicine.

Her current research interests focus on examining the molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to pregnancy-induced cardiac growth and the development of peripartum cardiomyopathy.
