How do I apply for admission to the Graduate Certificate Program in Asian Studies?

You must have earned a baccalaureate or other undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university, and meet the criteria for admission to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies at the University of Louisville http://louisville.edu/graduate. If you wish to pursue the graduate certificate in conjunction with a graduate degree program in another UofL department, you should be admitted to that degree program before applying for admission to the Graduate Certificate Program in Asian Studies.

To  submit a hardcopy application for admission to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies:

  1. Go to http://louisville.edu/graduate/futurestudents/apply-materials/application and choose Create an Account
  2. Complete User Info and Create username and password
  3. Click on “Create My Account”
  4. Click on General Instructions
  5. Under the Instructions Menu, click on Go to Application
  6. Under Graduate Admissions, click on Application
  7. Enter your newly created user ID and password
  8. Complete page 1-5
  9. Save after completion of each page

 If you applied on-line for admission to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies:

  1. Go to http://louisville.edu/graduate/futurestudents/apply-materials/application and choose Complete Application
    Insert your username and password
    Note: If you have forgotten your password please write to help@applyweb.com.
  2. Follow steps to page 5 from above and update any changed information
  3. Page 5:
    Under Admit Term, choose the semester you are applying for the certificate
  4. Click on Major Search and choose Asian Studies (AST), which is located under interdisciplinary Studies
    Under Degree Type, choose NON
  5. Choose your Education Plans
  6. Under Applicant type, choose NEW
  7. Under classification level, choose Non-Degree
  8. Page 6:
    Please note that the first chart is for undergraduates and the second chart is Graduate School.  Search and insert all institutions that you have attended. To find your school, click on FIND then type the full name in the first search box and click FIND SCHOOL. Make sure to choose the correct listing. Complete and go to page 7
  9. Page 7:
  10. In the comments box, indicate that you have already been accepted into the Graduate School and that you are applying for the Asian Studies Graduate Certificate. Include the name of your primary graduate degree program., such as M.A. in History. Sign the page by clicking YES and type the date.
  11. Click on SAVE, PAY, and SEND
    Note: There is no fee for applying to the Asian Studies Graduate Certificate.
  12. Under Payment Information, choose the last option: “Request a Fee Waiver”
  13. Click Continue
  14. On the following page, choose the first option that states, “Have you been a previous UofL student at the graduate level and are returning to UofL without attending another institution of higher learning?”
  15. Click on Submit
  16. A confirmation notice will be automatically sent to your UofL email account.
  17. Please send an email to Dr. Hua to let him know that you have applied.

Requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies

You must take 15 credit hours in graduate courses with an Asian emphasis.  At least three of the five required courses must be at the 600 level, and the five courses must be drawn from at least three of the following disciplines: Anthropology, Art History, Classical and Modern Languages, Geography, History, Humanities, Political Science, Sociology, Theatre Arts, or Women’s and Gender Studies.  A minimum of three credit hours must be in the Division of Humanities (exclusive of language courses), and at least 3 hours must be in the Division of Social Sciences.

To complete the Graduate Certificate, you must demonstrate reading knowledge in one of the following: Chinese, Japanese, or another language designated as an Asian language by the Program Director.

With the approval of the Program Director, an internship in a community or local business may be substituted for three (3) credit hours of classwork.  To be eligible for this substitution, the internship must involve work that is primarily connected with Asia or Asian-Americans in some way.

  • ARTH 531/631: Topics in Asian Art 
  • AST 500: Topics in Asian Studies (Humanities)
  • AST 502: Topics In Asian Studies (Social Sciences)
  • AST/ HIST 598:Nationalism and Modernity in East Asia
  • AST/POLS 641: Clash of Civilization in the 21st Century
  • GEOG 590: Special Topics
  • HIST 561: U.S. and Vietnam -WR
  • HIST/ WGST 584: Women in East Asia
  • HIST 591: Civilizations of Ancient and Medieval India - WR
  • HIST 592: Civilizations of Modern India - WR
  • TA 567: Asian Theatre

In addition to these courses, the Departments of Geography and Geosciences, History Political Science, and Women’s and Gender Studies, and the Division of Humanities, regularly offer topics courses and independent studies with an Asian focus at the 500 and 600 level.  These courses may be counted towards the Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies with the permission of the program director, who will determine which requirements the topics courses and independent studies fill.
