New online master’s program leverages artificial intelligence to improve population health

MS in AI in Medicine

In Fall 2024, the University of Louisville will launch a 100% online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medicine and become one of the few universities in the nation to offer this interdisciplinary degree. Students who complete this 30-credit hour graduate degree will gain a specialized skillset with capabilities to design, develop, and translate potential AI solutions and technologies to improve population health.

“Collaboration between engineering, medicine, and public health is needed to continue innovating in the healthcare space,” said Katie Cardarelli, Dean, School of Public Health and Information Sciences. “This joint program will give students a unique opportunity to learn from renowned experts in AI and bioinformatics. We’re excited about this partnership with the J.B. Speed School of Engineering.”

The MS in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine provides advanced training in AI methodologies, statistical computing, data mining, machine learning techniques, medical image computing, and medical data management.  Master’s students will also have opportunities to conduct basic and translational research in the areas of cancer, medical image analysis, pathology, and information science, among others.

UofL faculty in the Dept. of Bioengineering and the Dept. of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics created this master’s degree, as well as the online Certificate in AI in Medicine that is in collaboration with the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, to equip students for the next generation of healthcare technology. With the right tools, knowledge, and experiences, graduates will be able to effectively analyze medical problems and biomedical data, improve patient care, and advance as leaders and innovators within the healthcare industry.

Bert Little, PhD, professor and program coordinator, said, “The number of employment opportunities and graduates in this sector has grown substantially and will continue to expand over time. With this degree, professionals in this field will be poised to make significant contributions to improving patient care and advancing medical research.”
