Dr. Kathryn Marklein
Dr. Marklein spent five weeks excavating and analyzing Roman and Late Roman period individuals at the archaeological site of Syedra, in Alanya province. While there, Dr. Marklein excavated (with excellent teammates, Lizzy Bews, Melih Cilingir, Hakan Goncu, Emircan Eroglu, and Zuhal Onder) one of the looted Roman period tombs and several Late Roman cist graves and conducted preliminary demographic analysis on the individuals therein. Not only did this experience lay groundwork for future research on the lived experiences of people on this hilltop city, but it also resulted in many adventures, new friendships (human and animal), and lots of Turkish coffee. She is looking forward to returning there again next summer!
