Biography

Allie Corbin Hixson

Allie Corbin Hixson,
date unknown

Allie Corbin was born on May 28, 1924 and raised as one of eight children in a farm family in southern Kentucky. At age 18 she came to Louisville, where she met and married William Forrest Hixson (Bill). Together they raised their three children, Emma, Clarence and Walter. She combined the careers of mothering, homemaking and teaching in the Louisville public schools while pursuing further education. She is believed to be the first woman to earn a PhD in English from the University of Louisville.

The Hixsons moved to a farm in Adair County and at 51 years old, Allie Hixson’s life took a new direction with involvement in the national movement for women’s equality. Dedicated to women’s issues, she became one of the most prominent feminist leaders in Kentucky and an important leader in the national Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) movement. Hixson served as co-organizer of the Kentucky Pro-ERA Alliance and the Kentucky Women’s Agenda Coalition, was elected chair of the Kentucky International Woman’s Year in 1977, spoke at the National ERA Rally, and worked closely with Lt. Governor Thelma Stovall. She also led the Kentucky delegation to National Women’s Conference in Houston and served as one of the vice-chairs (1977). She was a founder of the Louisville Chapter of the Older Women’s League and was active in the American Association of University Women, Business and Professional Women, and Rural American Women.

Allie Hixson and Riane Eisler co-authored ERA Facts and Guide which was published in 1986 and continues to be the definitive guide to the Equal Rights Amendment. A natural orator, Allie often spoke publicly on behalf of women’s rights and the ERA. Her portrait hangs in the Rotunda of the Kentucky Capitol as a Notable Kentucky Woman. Allie Corbin Hixson passed away on October 30, 2007.
