Meet visiting scholar, Dr. Kenneth Toby Maduako

The Department of Epidemiology and Population Health (DEPH) was pleased to host Kenneth Toby Maduako, MD, as a visiting scholar in July and early August 2019.

Maduako is an OB/GYN from the University of Benin in Benin City, Nigeria. He holds an appointment with the teaching hospital and is pursuing a master’s degree in reproductive health at the university’s Center for Excellence in Reproductive Health Education. He also works closely with the Rural African Health Initiative, which cares for abandoned infants and young children.

He and Anne Wallis, PhD, MHS, associate professor, Department of Epidemiology and Population Health, share a deep interest in maternal and infant mortality prevention in West Africa. Maduako’s particular interests include understanding the causes for the very high maternal mortality rates in Nigeria and the reasons why many rural Nigerian women do not and cannot access medical care.

During his Louisville visit, Maduako primarily worked with Wallis, along with her DEPH colleagues Kira Taylor, PhD, MS, and doctoral candidate T’Shura Ali, MPH, on maternal health and fertility data. Maduako also spent time with Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences faculty members Scott LaJoie, PhD, and Muriel Harris, PhD. He joined LaJoie to teach SPHIS graduate students about research methods and maternal health issues in Nigeria.

Maduako and Wallis look forward to continuing their collaboration and developing new research studies with Taylor, LaJoie, and Harris.
