Data Briefs

Health policy support through data warehousing and analytics is one of the primary operations of the CIK. The CIK has collected a number of national and state-level databases. They include:

-- American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey
-- Area Health Resource Files (AHRF)
-- Behavioral and Risk Factors Surveillance Surveys (BRFSS)
-- Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)
-- Kentucky Health Facility and Services (KHFS)
-- Kentucky Health Issues Poll (KHIP)
-- National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH)
-- National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN)
-- NHIS Child and Family Core

Some of these databases (for example, AHA, HCUP, and KHFS) were purchased by the CIK. Some others (for example, AHRF and BRFSS) were downloaded and organized by the CIK staff. All these data will be provided to CIK scholars upon request.

On this page, the datasets are introduced through separate data briefs. The purpose of the briefs is to provide information about the contents and limitations of the datasets to researchers so that they can assess their usefulness for their research.

Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Databases

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) data is the biggest longitudinal hospital care data collection in the United States (U.S.). HCUP is essentially a family of healthcare databases that started in 1988. The databases are National Inpatient Sample (NIS), Kids’ Inpatient Database (KID), Nationwide Ambulatory Surgery Sample (NASS), Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS), Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD), State Inpatient Databases (SID), State Ambulatory Surgery and Services Databases (SASD), and State Emergency Department Databases (SEDD).

The Commonwealth Institute of Kentucky (CIK) and the Adolescent Health Research Design and Support Unit (CAHRDS) have jointly purchased the NIS (2000−2018), KID (1997−2019), NEDS (2006−2019), NRD (2010−2014 & 2019) datasets.

American Hospital Association Annual Survey Database

American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey Database (ASD) is a hospital database for peer comparisons, market analysis, and health services research that started in 1946. The Database is primarily from the Annual Survey of Hospitals administered by the AHA. AHA curates data and information from more than 6,200 hospitals and healthcare systems throughout the U.S. and associated areas. The purpose of the survey is to collect information on the organizational structure, service lines, utilization, finances, insurance and payment models, and staffing of U.S. hospitals. The survey’s overall response rate averages approximately 80% each year. For hospitals that do not respond at all or do not respond fully, a statistical methodology is run against their records to estimate some missing values.

Kentucky Health Facility and Services (KHFS) Data

Kentucky Health Facility and Services (KHFS) data includes information on inpatient and outpatient encounters from Kentucky hospitals and facilities. The data is organized into two separate files: inpatient and outpatient data files. Both patient and facility information is included in the data files. Patient information includes place of residence (county and zip code), demographics, admission (type, source, and LOS) and discharge (year, quarter, and status), diagnoses and procedures, and costs. Facility information includes name, location (county and zip code), class, category, and control.

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System’s (BRFSS) Data

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) started the state-based Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System’s (BRFSS) health-related telephone surveys in 1984. The BRFSS collects data from each state regarding U.S. adult residents’ health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services. States are required to conduct at least 2,500 interviews, and the BRFSS completes more than 400,000 interviews each year in order to have enough responses for weighting purposes. Each state submits respondent data to the CDC for state-specific agglomeration. The CDC provides the post-agglomerated data in standard tabulations to the states. The final results are published at the end of the year.

Area Health Resource Files (AHRF) Data

The Area Health Resource Files (AHRF), or Area Resource Files (ARF), data collection started in 1940. It is the result of a collaboration of three federal organizations: the Department of Health and Human Services, the Health Resource and Services Administration, and the Bureau of Health Professions. The historical data files provide national-, state-, and county-level information to policymakers, researchers, and other professionals to make informed decisions on health policy, healthcare planning, and health services research.(AHRF) Data
