Associate Professor, Director, Reconstructive Surgery Research Laboratory

About

Dr. Claudio Maldonado

Dr. Maldonado’s general research interests are in cardiovascular research and transplantation of composite vascularized allographs. He has a Physiology Ph.D. degree and is a tenured Professor in the Physiology Department at the University of Louisville. Dr. Maldonado was a member of the research team that performed pre-clinical studies that eventually led to clinical hand and face transplantation.

Dr. Maldonado’s translational research efforts have focused on novel applications of liposome delivery systems to reduce inflammation in transplantation, myocardial infarction and alcoholic liver disease (ALD). His research has focused on developing novel therapies that protect the endothelium from ischemia/reperfusion injury. Dr. Maldonado has developed novel liposome based technologies that rapidly modify the surface of the endothelium to stabilize barrier function to mitigate ischemia/reperfusion iatrogenic injury. In addition, he has developed liposomal formulations that target the liver to deliver anti-inflammatory inhibitors to treat ALD with reduced side-effects.
