Biography

Professor Tower-Pohl is a native of Germany and received her education at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt to become a teacher for German and English at German secondary schools.

Spending many years in Northern California, her professional career included teaching 12-months long total-immersion German courses at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, where she also became certified as a Foreign Language Oral Proficiency Tester for the Department of Defense. At the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey she enjoyed teaching graduate students and developing German business courses. 

Prof. Tower-Pohl´s professional path also led her to corporate management and not-for-profit business development. Serving as a founding board member of the International School of Monterey (K-12) and establishing it as a Charter School (against the customary global rule of being a high tuition private school) was one of her most rewarding experiences. School children of Central Coast communities are provided a unique, free, bi-lingual global education. They are graduating with an International Baccalaureat High School degree qualifying them to attend universities world-wide.

Prof. Tower-Pohl believes that her professional experiences inside and outside of academia have enriched her life in a variety of ways, thereby being able to add diverse layers to her teaching approach at UofL. Intermediate German courses lend themselves for this opportunity. She also encourages and advises students of the importance of Study Abroad programs, Internships, volunteering or working in a German-speaking country.
