Daldaloole, a Somali folktale

Description:

In this creative project, I sought to address the problem of representation in the media. Immigrant and refugee children are expected to assimilate within “American” society, leaving us little opportunity to embrace our cultures fully. For us, the greatest problem was that we had no one to relate to in the media we consumed. I want to provide comfort for marginalized youth and a way for them to connect with their culture. But, I also want to give others a chance to learn about other cultures by sharing their stories.

This project depicts the beginning of the folktale with the sky embracing the Earth, allowing human interaction with the sentient sky.
