Join us for a special presentation by international public health leader, Dr. Abdulsalami Nasidi, on Monday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 103 of the SPHIS Building (485 E. Gray Street).Everyone is welcome!
Dr. Nasidi is visiting the University of Louisville to complete discussions about a proposal that has been submitted to the governor of Sokoto State Nigeria to recruit, enroll and support three cohorts of Nigerian students in the School of Public Health and Information Sciences.
Dr. Nasidi will discuss the Ebola outbreak in Africa and the Nigerian response that led to rapid containment, his current role with Economic Community of West African States, and his experiences working in public health work in West Africa.
Dr. Nisidi is the acting Executive Director of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Regional Surveillance and Disease Control Centre (RCDC) and the former head of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). In his current position, Dr. Nisidi oversees a Regional Rapid Response Team intended to assist with the regional response to all public health crises in the region. The decision to establish the RCDC was reached following the devastating impact of the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease and Lassa Fever in West Africa.
About the Speaker
Dr. Abdulsalam Nisidi is the acting Executive Director of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Regional Surveillance and Disease Control Centre (RCDC), where he oversees a Regional Rapid Response Team. Dr. Nisidi holds many appointments including Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication and Routine Immunization, Chairman of the Avian and Pandemic Influenza Rapid Response Team, and Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Meeting (Group) of the World Health Organization. He is First Chairman of the Country Coordinating for the Global Fund in Nigeria, Vice Chairman for the REACH Care Foundation, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria. Dr. Nisidi is as a consultant for the World Health Organization on AIDS and hemorrhagic fever and a member of the Public Health Foundation of Nigeria.
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
The ECOWAS is made up of fifteen member countries that are located in the Western African region. These countries have both cultural and geopolitical ties and shared common economic interest. They are: Benin; Burkina Faso; Cabo Verde; Cote D’Ivoire; The Gambia; Ghana; Guinea; Guinea Bissau; Liberia; Mali; Niger; Nigeria; Senegal; Sierra Leone; and Tog
