Biostatistics is the development and application of statistical methodology for health sciences. Bioinformatics is the application of statistical methodology to proteomic, genomic, metabolomic, and other genetic data. The distinguished faculty of the Department of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics conduct research into statistical methodology and collaborate with investigators in the health sciences including in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and cancer research. Our mission is to advance statistical science through methodological research, to collaborate with scientists in many disciplines including medicine, dentistry, nursing, cancer research, natural sciences, and engineering, and to disseminate new and existing knowledge in statistical science through education.
The Department of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics offers master of science and doctoral degrees in biostatistics, with concentrations available in biostatistics and bioinformatics (PhD only). We provide the biostatistics concentration of the MPH degree of the School of Public Health and Information Science, participate in a joint PhD/MS degree program with the Department of Mathematics, and an interdisciplinary PhD with concentration in bioinformatics. Our graduates have obtained positions in academia, government, and industry. We are currently accepting applications for our MS and PhD degree programs.
