Theresa Rajack-Talley, "Ain't I a Woman and Am I Not a Scholar?"
Theresa Rajack-Talley (Professor, Pan-African Studies, Associate Dean for A&S International, Diversity and Engagement Programs) will discuss how Black women's lives as scholars and activists are connected to their social locations at the intersection of race/ethnicity, gender, social class and citizenship. Using her own experiences and those of the women she studied in her book, Poverty Is a Person, she maps a set of common commitments to education; family and community; mentorship; and participatory action within and outside of the academy and challenges the tendency to separate Black women's intellectual contributions from their roles as social justice advocates.
