Akers Graduate Assistantship

The Lilialyce Akers Graduate Assistantship in Community Engagement is made possible by a bequest from Dr. Lilialyce Akers to WGS to further students' interest in community engagement.

Dr. Akers was a member of the UofL Sociology Department and also a member of the WGS Affiliated Faculty. She introduced one of the first courses in WGS focusing on womens issues internationally, and she was very interested in students taking their research into the community. The assistantship named in her honor involves 20 hours a week of work in such activities as: developing internships in community organizations for our undergraduate majors; working on a Louisville high school liaison project; working on an oral history project documenting the early history of feminism in Louisville; working in the Anne Braden Institute on community projects.

Students who apply for this assistantship must have the ability to work independently and must also have their own transportation. The student awarded the assistantship must maintain full-time status (9 hours per semester) and must not be employed during the two semesters of the assistantship. The assistantship provides tuition, a stipend of $12,000, and health insurance. Students accepted in the dual degree program (M.A. in WGS/M.S.W. in Kent School of Social Work) will be considered for this assistantship only if they are enrolled in WGS courses full-time during both semesters (9 hours in fall and 9 hours in spring).

Incoming students with completed application materials, and continuing students may apply for the assistantship by completing the application form [pdf].

For academic year 2015-2016, the deadline for applications is March 2, 2015
