UofL Cares Spotlight: Kosair Charities

by Kosair Charities last modified Oct 23, 2012 10:23 AM

(Editor’s Note: This is the third of five UofL Cares spotlights.)

By making Kosair Charities a charity of choice for your UofL Cares gift, you will be helping us do so much in so many different ways to help so many kids.

In addition to being the largest benefactor to Kosair Childrens’ Hospital, our recently announced 2012–13 grants will provide more than $17 million to 90 nonprofits.

The University of Louisville is a long-standing partner in our quest to ensure happy, healthy childhoods for the kids of Kentucky and Southern Indiana. The history of the partnership between Kosair Charities and University of Louisville dates back almost 90 years to the very beginning of Kosair Charities and the Kosair Crippled Children’s Hospital — with Kosair Charities providing the funding and the facilities and UofL orthopedic and pediatric faculty providing the expertise and the care for our Kosair Kids.

After the closing of the Kosair Crippled Children’s Hospital, Kosair and UofL have continued to work together with Kosair Charities providing funding for programs at UofL that serve children, including funding for the Kosair Charities Pediatric Center, the Kosair Charities Pediatric Cancer Research Center and the Kosair Charities endowed professor in pediatric cardiology at the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute among many, many other programs.

In 2010 UofL and Kosair Charities worked together to open the UofL Autism Center at Kosair Charities with Kosair Charities providing rent-free space for this facility.

Work is under way right now on a new UofL Medical-Dental Home for underserved children on the Kosair Charities Campus, again with Kosair Charities providing rent-free space and UofL faculty providing the expertise and the care.

Again this year Kosair Charities awarded UofL an additional $1 million in grant funding, including $400,000 for the Pediatric Forensics Program, a program that Kosair Charities considers one of our most important partnerships to date.

Kosair Charities is working with physicians Jerry Rabalais and Melissa Currie, along with other community leaders, on our shared commitment to stop fatalities from child abuse and neglect in Kentucky. Kosair Charities believes this can be accomplished and has made a 10-year commitment to lead this important initiative.

But again, there is so much more to the Kosair Charities story, including the Kosair Charities Special Kids Program that helps individual families which cannot afford to pay for the health care that their children desperately need.

So Kosair Charities invites UofL faculty and staff to attend UofL Cares Day at Kosair Charities Oct. 25, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will have a complimentary lunch, door prizes (bring your business cards) and Kosair Charities and UofL Autism Center tours. Most importantly this will be an opportunity for you to visit our campus, learn more about who we are and what we do and allow us to thank you for your support of UofL Cares while also celebrating our very important partnership with the University of Louisville. We look forward to seeing you on Oct. 25 so RSVP to 637-7696 or
