The Staff Senate is part of UofL’s shared governance system, which also includes the Faculty Senate and the Student Government Association. Senators are elected by their peers. The full body met in regular session Oct. 8 at the School of Dentistry. Chair Dhiane Bradley opened the meeting.

This is what happened:

Action items: First reading of updated bylaws changes. The major changes included adding the Staff Senate officers to each of the committees as non-voting ex-officio members.

Reports to the Senate

Faculty Senate – Bob Staat, faculty liaison, reported on the Oct. 3 Faculty Senate meeting. Staat said President James Ramsey and Provost Shirley Willihnganz presented information on university goals and individual goals. The goals, which included increasing the number of degrees conferred, fundraising and community partnerships, are outlined in the Oct. 3 Faculty Senate meeting overview.

Sam Connally, vice president for human resources, reported that open enrollment information will be shared with employees soon. Connally said at the meeting it appeared all health plans for the 2013 would see an increase. He said information about open enrollment will be on UofL Today when it its finalized.

After a recent rebidding process, the university elected to stay with United Healthcare for the next year. However, the health plan will be rebid again in early 2013. Connally said the university may issue a Competitive Bid RFP, which would allow the university to negotiate with bidders in order to get a better contract.

Connally also said a leave form is continuing to be drafted for the Community Service Leave Program pilot. Under the pilot, employees could use one work day during this fiscal year to volunteer at any nonprofit community service organization, excluding those with political or religious affiliation. More information to come from HR.

Dhiane Bradley, staff senate chair, reported that the staff senate executive committee has formed an ad hoc committee to review its strategic goals and consider how to align the goals with the university’s 2020 plan. Christian Gamm, staff senate vice chair, will lead the committee.

The Senate will meet again Monday, Nov. 12, in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library, Belknap Campus.
