Staff Senate Meeting Overview May 2014

by UofL Today last modified May 22, 2014 09:45 AM

The Staff Senate is part of UofL's shared governance system, which also includes the Faculty Senate and the Student Government Association. Senators are elected by their peers.

The full body met in regular session May 12 at Ekstrom Library. Chair Angela Lewis-Klein presided. The following are highlights from the meeting.

The following nominations for sitting officers were approved for June’s officer elections:

Chair: Angela Lewis-Klein

Vice Chair: Will Armstrong

Secretary/Treasurer: Martyna Warren

Questions were later raised over whether nominations from the floor should have been accepted. Parliamentarian Missy Long Shuter reopened the nominations to allow any from the floor, resulting in the following nominees:

Secretary/Treasurer: Gary Southard

Chair: Susan Jenkins

In addition, on a voice vote, the following returning senators were approved:

Music-Debbie Kalbfleish

President’s Office–Tammy Lawson

Public Health-Vicki Lewis

Community Engagement–Susan Jenkins

Research–Angela Lewis-Klein

The senate also approved a proposal to reinstate acknowledging senators’ birthdays every month and perfect attendance each year. Susan Jenkins presented the proposal for the Staff Morale and Community Outreach standing committee. Senators will be given the option on their application to opt in or out of the birthday month acknowledgements. Also being considered is whether anniversaries of five years and more will be acknowledged.

Report Highlights

Lisa London represented Human Resources. She noted the HR Progress Report for fiscal year 2013-2014 has been posted to the HR website. It can be found here. There were no questions.

Stephanie Salings reported that the university-wide Dining and Vending Services Advisory Committee is changing its name to the Dining and Nutrition Services Advisory Committee. This prompted discussion about how to best expand dining options on both the HSC and Belknap campuses during the summer. Angela Lewis-Klein noted it is generally difficult to expand options on the HSC campus because it has a smaller population than Belknap and because the population keeps late hours. She also noted that Sodexo is UofL’s exclusive food service provider.
