Message from the Provost: State of the University activities

by UofL Today last modified Aug 14, 2012 10:42 AM

Dear Colleagues,

The State of the University Address is nearly upon us. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Dr. Ramsey’s appointment as president, and he would like to use this special occasion to highlight our outstanding faculty. We are developing a series of events and activities along the theme “A Celebration of Faculty Excellence.”

The week will kick off with the annual School of Music Faculty Gala on Friday, Sept. 7. This free event will feature some of the School of Music’s top faculty performing their favorite works.

Our Faculty/Staff Appreciation Picnic will follow on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Shelby Campus.

We’ll continue the theme with a new faculty reception on Monday, Sept. 10; a symposium on “The Central Role of Faculty” Sept. 11; and the annual Celebration of Faculty Excellence, which recognizes our Distinguished Faculty Award winners and other outstanding achievements, also on Sept. 11.

We’ll send more information about these and other events in the coming weeks. Watch UofL Today for updates.

These activities will lead up to the State of the University address Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. in Comstock Hall at the School of Music. We encourage all faculty, staff and students to join Dr. Ramsey in celebrating our accomplishments and expressing our hopes and plans for the future.

We are planning a processional from the University Club to the School of Music starting at about 2:15 p.m. These people are invited to participate in the processional:

  • At least two faculty members from each department and/or unit
  • All faculty senators
  • Members of the Executive Committee of the Staff Senate
  • One staff senator from each department and/or unit (to be identified by the department/unit head)
  • The head of each unit’s student council
  • The SGA president

This will be a formal event, and apparel will be supplied for participants. Apparel orders are due by midnight Tuesday, Aug. 21. Each participant is asked to register and to order apparel at Even if you do not need apparel, we encourage you to register so we can provide you with information about the processional.

As a metropolitan university, we are committed to a leadership role in the community. The State of the University is an important way for the campus community to join with the larger community to celebrate our contributions. Because of the importance of this event, no classes will meet from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 12th. Instructors should modify meeting times for classes affected by this change. (For example, 3 p.m. classes should begin at 3:45 p.m.)

I look forward to seeing you as we celebrate this special occasion.

Shirley C. Willihnganz

Executive Vice President and University Provost

Note: The provost issued this note to all faculty and staff via email on Aug. 13.
