  • University officials will dedicate the new student rec center today at 2 p.m. and it will be open for student, faculty and staff tours until 5 p.m. The center is on Fourth Street south of Cardinal. It is expected to officially open for use later in October.
  • Crews from ESPN shot footage on campus Thursday for use during the Homecoming football game broadcast Friday night. If you aren’t at the game, tune in and see not only gridiron action, but the academic and student life sides of campus.

The men’s soccer team will take on conference rival UCONN. Free beanies will be given to the first 150 fans and free Louligan student T-shirts for the first 150 rowdy students with a UofL ID. Come out and support the Cards.

3.) Information Technology
Security alert: ‘ransomware’
IT has confirmed an instance of malware known as “ransomware” that exposed a faculty member to potential data loss. This type of infection encrypts data making it unavailable until a ransom is paid. The university’s virus protection solution includes protection from the latest versions; however, it may not be enough. It is very important to verify that your virus protection client is receiving current updates. Review the links included here for other safeguards.

4.) New office supply contract with OfficeMax
Reminder: Effective Nov. 1 OfficeMax will replace Staples as the office supply provider for UofL. To those responsible for ordering office supplies, please be sure to complete your registration at surveymonkey.com/s/RMQFPRL no later than today, Friday, Oct. 18.

5.) Free shredding of personal papers
10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Oct. 23
As part of the Sustainability Week events, a Shred-it truck will be parked in the circle in front of the College of Business to provide free shredding of personal papers for employees and students. This will include computer diskettes and video tapes, as long as they are sorted separately from the paper. Please take this opportunity to clean up your home in a sustainable way.

6.) Heads up: cap and gown ordering for December 2013 Commencement Ceremony
Deadline: Oct. 31, midnight
The ordering website is open for faculty and students to order academic apparel for the December 2013 Commencement ceremony. Graduation participants should visit the commencement website for information on the ceremony or ordering instructions.

Five spots are still available and open to faculty and staff. This year’s intercultural community development focused trip is planned in cooperation with Service for Peace. Travel with students doing voluntary service in La Represa, Dominican Republic. Register here.

8.) Bingham Clinic Centennial Symposium: Contemporary perspectives in child and adolescent mental health
All day Nov. 8 starting at 8 a.m.; 8:30 a.m. - noon Nov. 9 Norton Hospital, Wade Mountz Auditorium
Free to medical students, residents and fellows
Join David Lohr, MD, and the department of pediatrics for this CME educational symposium which will celebrate the centennial of the Bingham Child Guidance Clinic by presenting an up-to-date overview of key topics in child and adolescent mental health. There will be an anniversary dinner Friday night and a community forum Saturday morning.
