1.) Start your Memorial Day shopping at Gray St. Farmers Market

May 22, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 400 block of E. Gray St.

Items this week include asparagus, lettuce, kale, spinach, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, napa cabbage, red oak leaf lettuce, sprouts and radishes. For lunch, GMeals is offering tofu BBQ or grilled fish tacos. Grind will also be there serving up their signature burgers. And don't forget Sweet and Savory's crepes!

2.)  Get gardening and get free strawberries

Interested in health, sustainability, good food and growing things? UofL’s Garden Commons at the Cultural Center is a space for staff, faculty, students and community members who are ready to get their hands dirty or to integrate the garden into their coursework and research. Join us as we make plans for the summer management of UofL's organic urban farm. Come and enjoy fresh-picked strawberries, lettuce, spinach, mint and herbs.

3.) Streets near Belknap to be closed May 26 for Hike, Bike and Paddle event

 

Some streets near Belknap Campus will be closed Monday, May 26, for the Mayor’s Hike, Bike and Paddle event. Second Street from Cardinal Boulevard to Broadway and Third Street from Southern Parkway to Broadway will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parking will not be allowed on either street from Cardinal to Breckinridge Street from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Click here for more information.

4.) Girl Scouts, UofL offer STEM day camp

July 7 to 11

Imagine Your STEM Future is a day camp for girls entering grades 9 to 12. It is a collaborative event between Girl Scouts of Kentucky and UofL. Camp will take place at Girl Scouts headquarters July 7, 8, 9 and 11 and on the UofL campus July 10. Anyone in STEM fields who would like to volunteer to share your career stories or current research with the girls contact Nora Honken, nbhonk01@louisville.edu.

5.) Infant scientists wanted

Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Saturday appointments available), Davidson Hall 314

The UofL Infant Cognition Lab (department of psychological and brain sciences) is conducting several studies on infant face perception. Infants who are between 3 and 8 months old with normal vision and hearing are invited to participate. Participation involves one brief visit to campus. Infants will receive a UofL t-shirt or bib for participating.

6.) Signal transduction in anatomical neuroplasticity to be discussed

7.) Ophthalmology and visual sciences seminar features Hod Lipson, PhD

May 23, 11 a.m. to noon, Kentucky Lions Eye Center, Basement Conference Room

Hod Lipson, PhD, associate professor, mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell University, will present “The Robotic Scientist: Distilling Natural Laws from Experimental Data, from Cognitive Robotics to Computational Biology.”

8.) Pharmacology and Toxicology presents research seminar

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology presents a research seminar by Ralf Janknecht, PhD, associate professor of cell bology, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center: “Dangerous liaison in prostate cancer: Transcription factor ETV1 and histone demethylase JMJD2A.”

Grand Rounds

9.) Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health

May 23, 1 p.m., Health Sciences Center Auditorium, 600 S. Preston

Sara E. Petruska, MD, assistant professor and generalist with the UofL School of Medicine, department of obstetrics, gynecology and women's health, will present "Courtroom Drama--How to Stay out of the Courtroom and How to Cope with the Process Should you Find Yourself There." Dr. Petruska will help participants discover ways to avoid common medicolegal pitfalls in obstetrics and gynecology.

10.) Pediatrics

May 23, 8 a.m., Norton Hospital, 2nd Floor Auditorium

Please join us for a pediatric grand rounds featuring Sara M. Multerer, MD. Multerer is an associate director of the pediatric residency program and assistant professor at UofL. She will present “Being a Good Teacher: What Our Learners Tell Us.”

11.) Family and Geriatric Medicine

May 23, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Bottigheimer Auditorium

Robin Curry, MD, UofL Sports Medicine fellow, presents "Evaluation and Treatment of the Injured Runner." She will outline common running injuries faced in the clinical setting and discuss appropriate treatment of these various running injuries. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and ACCME accreditation, and a continental breakfast will be provided.
