1.) Neuroscience symposium: ‘Anatomical and Functional Modularity of the Cerebral Cortex’
Starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 1 – 2, Jewish Hospital Conference Center
Free
Clinicians, researchers, scientists and students can engage with the top neuroscience researchers in the nation around the latest results in cerebral cortex research. Speakers include National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine members.

2.) Poster session of summer undergraduate research
Noon - 3 p.m. July 31 Rooms 109 - 110 Abell Administration Center, Health Sciences Center
Sixty undergraduate students will present the results from their 10-week summer research experience. Participants in the Biology REU, Cancer Education R25, Chemistry REU, KBRIN, Physiology Cardiovascular, SROP and students supported by faculty grants, will present.

3.) BATS game early bird ticket (and possible perks) deadline this week
5:30 p.m. with game time at 7:05 p.m., Aug. 22, Slugger Field
$7. Purchase tickets by Aug. 2 to get possible perks (see below).
If you buy your tickets for UofL Night at the BATS by Friday, your child (or grandchild) might be selected to call the first pitch over the stadium PA system and you could win such prizes as a BATS VIP family pack for four. UofL Night at the BATS will feature free merry-go-round rides for the kids, music and discounts at the Against the Grain. The internationally acclaimed Cardinal Singers will perform the national anthem. Sponsors: UofL Alumni Association and Great Places to Work Initiative.

5.) Back-to-school eye exams

Saturday eye clinic hosted by UofL Physicianseye specialists. University of Louisville Physicians Rahul Bhola, MD, will conduct eye exams.

6.) Get ready—Become a nonsmoker

Free, public
UofL Kentucky Cancer Program is sponsoring free Cooper Clayton Smoking Cessation classes. The program consists of 13 one-hour weekly sessions. The class is open to all, ages 18 and over. Participants use nicotine replacement products such as the nicotine patch, nicotine gum or nicotine lozenge (free to class attendees). This is a science-based program which uses education, skills training and social support.

7.) Privacy Office launches new website—new URL
The UofL Privacy Office announces the recent launch of its new website in the Plone4 environment. Please bookmark the new URL: http://louisville.edu/privacy. The easy-to-navigate site contains HIPAA guidance, FAQs, HIPAA training information and enrollment form, covered entity status, business associate agreement information and templates, and more. Registration for HIPAA training is now online.

8.) GTA Academy takes applications through Aug. 27
The Graduate Teaching Assistant Academy is a yearlong series of sessions designed to support knowledge, skills and excellence in college teaching. The student cohort participates in interactive workshops along with faculty mentors selected for their expertise in teaching. All graduate students are encouraged to apply, but participation will be limited and competitive. Applications are accepted until Aug. 27 and sessions will begin Sept. 11.

9.) First-time online instructors

10.) Core Microscopy Showcase
10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. July 30 Cardiovascular Innovation Institute, Health Sciences Center
Open to all, especially those with interest in becoming Core Users
The Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center (KSCIRC) and The Cardiovascular Innovation Institute (CII) present a Core Microscopy Showcase featuring insightful discussion of core microscopy imaging capabilities, techniques, and data analyses. Speakers are from KSCIRC, CII, School of Dentistry, and the Department of Anatomical Sciences & Neurobiology. Continental breakfast / light refreshments will be provided.

Please join the Delphi Center and Glen Garrett from iClicker for lunch and a session on WebClicker. Webclicker is a tool that allows students the convenience of using their smart phone or laptop as a clicker for in-class polling. Lunch is being provided for this session.
