DID YOU KNOW?

In 1987, UofL’s Office of News and Public Information (now the Office of Communications and Marketing) organized a Howard Schnellenberger lookalike contest to promote homecoming week. Around a dozen mustache-wearing, pipe-smoking men hammed it up on a stage in the Humanities Quad in a no-holds-barred quest for first prize—a free trip to the Orange Bowl with the football coach and his family. Schnellenberger’s wife, Beverly, judged the contest by kissing each entrant. Who won? None other than Jim Mardis, father of UofL Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Mike Mardis. “I remember my Dad picked her up in the air—literally swept her off her feet—when he kissed her,” said Mardis, who was attending St. Xavier High School at the time.
