·        VIDEO: Recognizing Kosair Charities’ longtime support helping UofL become a nationally recognized metropolitan research university, our newest research facility has been renamed. The building, on the Health Sciences Center campus at the corner of Hancock and Muhammad Ali, is now the Kosair Charities Clinical and Translational Research Building. Watch the announcement here.

DID YOU KNOW?

 

Did you know … One of the weekly vendors at the new Belknap Campus Farmers Market is part-time UofL professor Jeneen Wiche, a longtime radio and television personality in the city. She has taught at UofL since 1998, offering courses such as Food and Body Politic. She sells items from her Swallow Rail Farm in Simpsonville. Her late father, Fred Wiche, was the popular WHAS-TV “Weekend Gardener.”

Today’s farmers markets: corn, tomatoes, peppers, peaches, blueberries!

1.) Gray Street

Thursdays through Oct. 30, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 400 block of E. Gray Street, rain or shine

Some items available today will include: tomatoes, corn, green beans, squash, zucchini, kale greens, cucumbers, onions, peppers, salad mix, blueberries, patty pan squash and golden beets. Also pickles, breads, maple syrup, pizza crusts, chocolate zucchini brownies, raspberry window pane cookies, Mr. G’s Kettle Corn, Gmeals, Red Top Gourmet Hot Dogs, Sweet ‘N Savory.

2.) Belknap

Thursdays through Oct. 16, 3:30 to 6 p.m., 3rd and Brandeis, rain or shine

Some items available today will include: peaches, raspberries, blueberries, corn, green beans, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, purple and gold potatoes, chard, golden beets, kale, onions, patty pan squash and pasture-raised poultry and lamb, pork sausage and eggs. 3.) First Friday Line Dancing! (Second Friday because of holiday)

July 11, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center at Humana Gym, 601 Presidents Blvd.

Feel the beat and bust a move at this free after-work dance party! Join Get Healthy Now and the Great Places to Work Campus Climate Committee for a fun hour of dancing with your UofL colleagues. Check out this short video, invite your colleagues and come kick off your weekend with some fun.

4.) July 14 is last day to enroll in the Microsoft Campus Agreement (MCA)

Enroll in the MCA by July 14 to ensure departmental software and computers are licensed for 12 months through June 30, 2015. MCA provides access to Microsoft Windows, Office, free online Microsoft training and discounted work at home versions of Windows and Office. The rate for fiscal year 2014-15 is $79 per full-time employee. Visual Studios is not included in this year’s agreement. For enrollment information, click here.

5.) Faculty: Register for a half-day workshop on critical reflection

July 15, 9 a.m. to noon, Delphi Center Lab, Ekstrom 244

Free

This interactive workshop, "Getting Students to 'Go Deep': Process, Practice and Learning through Critical Reflection,” will explore the teaching and assessment practice that deepens students’ learning, critical thinking and metacognitive skills. Participants will gain insight into how to connect your learning outcomes to critical reflection activities in a meaningful way.

6.) Kentucky and its people through the eyes of travelers, mapmakers and surveyors

July 18, noon to 1 p.m., Filson Historical Society, 1310 S. 3rd St.

$10, free for Filson members

James Pritchard, Cassie Bratcher and Jana Meyer of the Filson staff will discuss documents pertaining to early travel and settlement in Kentucky. Rare maps and travel narratives will be showcased during the presentation. The Filson is a member of the Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

7.) Lunch and Learn: How gum disease affects your whole body

July 23, noon to 12:30 p.m., Health Care Outpatient Center, Suite 120 Conference Center

Dr. Ricardo Vidal with UofL Dental Associates is the presenter. Lunch is free and must be reserved through Eventbrite by July 17. Space is limited.

 

Studies

8.) Participants needed for a dental study

9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. July 8 Graduate Periodontics Clinic, University of Louisville School of Dentistry, Health Sciences Center

The School of Dentistry is conducting a study on changes to the microbial transcriptome during experimental gingivitis. The study is to find out what bacterial genes are active in the mouth at the start of gingivitis (reversible gum disease). The study will involve four to six visits to the dental school over four to six weeks, during which time you will refrain from oral hygiene in one half of your mouth. The first and last visit will last 1.5 to 2 hours. The other visits are expected to last around 30 minutes. Participants will receive compensation in the form of a gift card.

9.) Orthopaedic Surgery

Please join us as we welcome Ryan Krupp, MD, UofL clinical instructor, department of orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Krupp will lecture on "Shoulder and Elbow Injury Prevention in Baseball."

10.) Family and Geriatric Medicine

July 11, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Bottigheimer Auditorium

Charles Kodner, MD, UofL associate professor, department of family medicine, presents "Medicine Gone to Pot: The Evidence for and Against Medical Marijuana." He will describe the pharmacology, proposed medical indications and current medical evidence regarding efficacy and side effects for medical marijuana and cannabinoids. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and ACCME accreditation and a continental breakfast will be provided.
