1.) Intramural Sports hosting International Night

7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Feb. 21, Student Recreation Center

Free

Come join Intramural Sports for our 24th International Night in the new Student Recreation Center. We will have demonstrations from our badminton club, promotional testing in aikido, open play indoor soccer and information about intramural programs. The evening will also feature three basketball games between UofL and UK dental school students. Come join us for an exciting evening of outreach and activities. Events are free and open to the entire UofL community.

2.) Workshop to address coping with, communicating about cancer

8 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. March 17, conference room, Baptist Health Louisville Cancer Care Center, Building H

Free; $20 for CEU Certificate in Social Work

Krista Nelson, MSW, will lead a workshop “When a Parent has Cancer: A Family-based Approach to Coping and Communication.” Sponsored by The Kent School of Social Work and Baptist Health Cancer Care, this workshop will present an innovative family intervention to overcome family communication barriers around cancer. The university’s internet and network connectivity will experience brief intermittent outages for firewall maintenance during IT’s regular preventive maintenance period. Please note that other systems (e.g. Blackboard, email, instant messaging, PeopleSoft, ULink, data services, etc.) may be taken offline without notice. 5.) UofL’s Appro Therapeutics wins Fast Pitch at Cardinal Challenge

The team from the College of Business took first place in the Fast Pitch competition at the 2014 Cardinal Challenge. Appro Therapeutics’ Will Morris had 60 seconds to pitch his team’s concept -- a new cancer therapy. Appro beat out seven other teams for the first-place prize of $1,500. Other winners included teams from Notre Dame (first-place business plan); University of Texas-Austin (second); Rice University (third); and University of Michigan (fourth). Cardinal Challenge is hosted annually by the College of Business.

6.) Nominations requested for Unsung SHERO Award

Nominations will be accepted through March 28 for the Unsung SHERO Award presented by the UofL Transformation Tea Committee. Email Kathryn Doaty or Georgette Moore for award criteria, nomination form and more details. The award recipient will be recognized at the April 16 Transformation Tea event. 8.) Cancer Center, Economics to present lecture on prescription drug insurance

The Brown Cancer Center and the Department of Economics will present “Effects of Prescription Drug Insurance on Hospitalization and Mortality: Evidence from Medicare Part D.” Our speaker will be Robert Kaestner, PhD, professor in the Institute of Government and Public Affairs and professor in the Department of Economics of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Luz Fernandez, assistant professor, Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine, UofL, presents “Common GI Problems in Autism.” She will discuss a few GI problems common to individuals with autism spectrum disorders; recognize some common physical and behavioral signs/symptoms associated with common GI issues in ASD; discuss common treatments in primary care of the GI issues discussed; and discuss a threshold for testing and referral to GI specialists. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and AACME.

This Friday, please join us for the 17th Annual Doctor Lawrence A. Davis Memorial Lectureship featuring Lane F. Donnelly, MD. Donnelly is chief medical officer and physician-in-chief at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Fla. He is also a professor of radiology at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and Florida State University. Donnelly will present about patient safety.

Former UofL Department of Surgery Pediatric Surgery Fellow Romeo C. Ignacio, Jr., MD, is returning to Louisville to give the Hirikati Nagaraj, MD lecture during surgery grand rounds Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 a.m. The title of his talk is “The Surgical Role of U.S. Military Humanitarian Missions.” Ignacio is clinical assistant professor, University of California San Diego Medical School, and assistant professor, Uniform Services, University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.
