1.) UofL to commemorate March on Washington anniversary
1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Aug. 28, Belknap Campus
The campus community will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, starting with the panel discussion, “Reflections on Dr. King’s Dream.” There will be a symbolic march from the Red Barn to the Humanities Quad and a keynote address from Raoul Cunningham, president of the Louisville chapter of the NAACP and a participant in the 1963 march.

2.) Save the date: Faculty, staff picnic scheduled for Sept. 6
11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, Humanities Quad, Belknap Campus
Burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and other treats will be on the menu at the annual UofL faculty-staff appreciation picnic. President James Ramsey, Provost Shirley Willihnganz and others will be on hand to thank faculty and staff for their contributions during the past year. Shuttles will be available to and from the Health Sciences Center.

As part of the Neuroscience Grand Rounds, the Department of Neurology is pleased to have Jonathan Pratt, MD, from the Department of Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division, to present “Cannabinoids as Analgesics.”

4.) Surplus Warehouse to close for auction preparation
The Surplus Warehouse at 1901 S. Floyd St. on Belknap Campus will be closing Aug. 29 to prepare for the next auction on Saturday, Sept. 21. The initial auction list will be posted on the Surplus website by Sept. 6. The Surplus Warehouse will be open for viewing and reserving surplus items for department use on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 8 a.m. – noon and 1– 4 p.m. We request that all items reserved be removed as soon as possible.

5.) 2013 - 2014 Part-Time Faculty Institute
5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 Delphi Center, Ekstrom Library, Room 244
The Delphi Center announces the first session of the 2013 - 2014 Part-Time Faculty Institute. Have your students resisted participating in the group projects you assign? Have you struggled to make student groups work? If you answered “yes” to either question, then this is the workshop for you. Join us for supper and “Strategies for Designing and Facilitating Effective Group Projects.” Eligible participants may qualify for a $300 stipend if they attend all 2013 - 2014 sessions.

6.) PLAN workshop: Making the Most of Professional Development Opportunities for Grad Students (Belknap and HSC sessions)
12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Aug. 27 Room 105, Houchens Building, Belknap Campus
2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Aug. 29 Room 2034, K Building, Health Sciences Center
No matter where you are in your graduate program, thinking ahead to make the most of professional development opportunities can make a real difference in your success and satisfaction during and after graduate school. In this session, participants will learn more about making a PLAN for professional development during their graduate school experience, as well as opportunities that currently exist.

7.) Dissertation Writing Accountability Group for graduate students
9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. starting Aug. 30 Ekstrom Library, Room 409
Writing the dissertation can be a long and lonely process, and it can be easy to lose momentum. This weekly writing group will provide a shared quiet space where students can write alongside other students at the dissertation stage, providing company, support and accountability. The structure of the meetings will be determined by the needs of the participants at the Aug. 30 meeting.
