1.) President Ramsey to hold budget forum

April 17, 10 a.m., SAC, Floyd Theater

UofL President James Ramsey will discuss the university’s budget at an open forum. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend, to ask questions and to provide feedback.


2.) Register now for the 2014 Faculty/Staff Open Walls exhibit

Registration due April 28

Show May 12 to 23, Ekstrom Library, Photographic Archives

The 2014 Open Walls exhibit of artwork by UofL faculty and staff is scheduled for May 12 to 23 in the Photographic Archives gallery at Ekstrom Library. The exhibit is an opportunity for UofL employees who are not professional or exhibited artists to share their work. All media (i.e., painting, photography, woodworking, mixed media, fiber arts, jewelry, crafts) will be accepted. An artist reception will be held May 12 from noon to 1 p.m.  Guidelines for the 2014 exhibit can be found here. Registration is due April 28; form can be found here. 3.) All invited to participate in Relay for Life, cancer awareness

April 18, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Multipurpose room, Student Activities Center

$10+ for registration; $10 for luminaria

UofL’s American Cancer Society student group invites all faculty, staff and UofL community to battle against cancer at the eighth annual Relay for Life fundraiser. There will be fun, family-friendly activities such as a hypnotist performance, student booths and dance parties. If you can’t make it to the walk, purchase a luminaria for just $10 to honor a loved one with cancer. The luminarias will be lit at the overnight event during the Luminaria Ceremony.

4.) ‘Lighten Your Load’ by exchanging/donating unwanted items

April 25, 1 to 3 p.m., Miller Hall, FYRC

The University of Louisville has partnered with Goodwill for an end-of-year move out event. On April 25, Miller Hall will be hosting Lighten Your Load! This is an opportunity for residents and members of the Louisville community to stop by Miller's FYRC room to exchange items that would typically be discarded at the end of the spring semester (like old clothes, nonperishable foods and household appliances). Items left at the end of the event are donated to Goodwill. Guest speakers begin at 1:30 p.m.

5.) Sign up now for Weigh to Wellness I and II

Free to employees, retirees and their spouse/QA

Get Healthy Now is pleased to announce a new summer session of our comprehensive weight management program! Join us for a 12-week class that teaches nutrition and exercise education in a group setting. Complete with challenges, weekly weigh-ins and more! Participants will learn how to make sustainable lifestyle change and set effective goals. A recent participant shared: "This program is wonderful ... It has made a huge difference in our lives and our children’s lives.”

6.) Tuition remission requests due for Summer term

Attention employees and employees with dependents! The Summer 2014 term is approaching! If you are registered for classes and have not yet submitted a tuition remission request for the Summer 2014 semester for yourself or your dependent, please do so at Reminder, you or your dependent must be registered for classes prior to requesting tuition remission.

7.) Community Engagement Faculty Grant recipients announced

The 2014 recipients of the Office of Community Engagement Faculty Grant program have been announced. Please see the website for recipient list.



8.) Chemistry seminar scheduled

April 18, 4 p.m., Chemistry Building, Room LL-16

Free, open to the public

Rajalingam Dakshinamurthy, PhD, department of chemistry, Western Kentucky University, will present "Gold Nanoparticles for Biological Applications and Protein Biochemistry of Cytokines."

9.) Orthopaedic Surgery presents Craig S. Roberts, MD

April 18, 6:45 to 7:45 a.m., Baxter I Research Building, auditorium, lower level


Craig S. Roberts, MD, K. Armand Fischer professor and chair, University of Louisville, department of orthopaedic surgery, will present "ICD-10: What Every Orthopaedic Surgeon Needs to Know."

10.) Pediatrics presents ‘Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome’

April 18, 8 a.m., Norton Hospital, 2nd floor auditorium

Please join us for a pediatric grand rounds featuring Lori Devlin, DO; Scott Duncan, MD;  and Nicholas Mellen, PhD. Devlin is assistant professor and Duncan is associate professor in the division of neonatology in the department of pediatrics and Mellen is assistant professor in the pediatric research institute at the University of Louisville. They will be presenting “Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome – What We Have Learned and Future Directions.”

11.) Family and Geriatric Medicine presents Gerald Lee, MD

April 18, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Bottigheimer Auditorium


Gerald Lee, MD, assistant professor, department of pediatrics, UofL will present "Update on the Management of Asthma in Older Adults." He will name features of asthma unique to older adults; identify important co-morbidities that complicate the management of asthma; design a management plan for asthma that addresses the needs of the older adult asthmatic.

12.) Neuroscience presents ‘Congenital Malformations of the Spine’

13.) Neuroscience presents ‘The Placebo Effect’

The department of neurosurgery is pleased to have Udit Chaddha, MD, present "The Placebo Effect." Dr. Chaddha is a resident in the UofL department of internal medicine.

14.) Neuroscience presents ‘Median Nerve Neuropathy for Neurosurgeons’

June 12, 8 to 9 a.m., School of Nursing auditorium, Room 4003

The department of neurosurgery is pleased to have Huey Y. Tien, MD, present "Median Nerve Neuropathy for Neurosurgeons." Dr. Tien is a practicing physician at Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center in Louisville. He's also an associate clinical professor in the UofL department of surgery’s division of hand surgery.
