UofL events support ending violence against women

The University of Louisville will participate in V-Day 2014, a global movement that seeks to end violence against women, with events and activities Feb. 3-8.

Under the theme “VWEEK: Rising for Justice 2014,” UofL’s events are designed to draw attention to the one billion women globally who the United Nations says will be raped or beaten in their lifetimes. V-Day’s goal is to have one billion women and their supporters worldwide take a stand to end violence.

V-Day events at UofL are organized by the Prevention, Education and Advocacy on Campus and in the Community (PEACC). Activities are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted and include:

  • Feb. 3, noon, West Plaza (outside of the Swain Student Activities Center), “Let the Beat Rise!” Participants will form a community drum circle in a show of support to end violence against women. In case of inclement weather, event will be moved to Jazzman’s, first floor, SAC.

  • Feb. 4, 7 p.m., Strickler Hall auditorium, “To Write Love on Her Arms.” Jamie Tworkowski will discuss his non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. Music provided by Steven McMorran of Satellite. This event is sponsored by the Student Activities Board and the Engage Lead Serve Board. .

  • Feb. 5, noon to 1 p.m., PEACC office, Student Services Annex, “VMen’s TEDTalk.”  Hosted by Men of PEACC, speakers will share stories about their experience with violence, along with two TEDTalk videos.

  • Feb. 6-8, 8 p.m. nightly, The Playhouse, 1911 South Third St., “The Vagina Monologues.” Students and guest actresses will perform Eve Ensler’s awarding-winning play that celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Admission is $8 for college students with ID and $10 for all others.  Purchase tickets online at or at the door with cash or check.
