The Eclectic Dance Company to perform
The Eclectic Dance Company, a dance troupe from Alabama State University (ASU) that integrates modern, African and jazz dance, will perform at UofL at 7:30 p.m. April 5 and 6.
Its show, “Metamorphosis: Fantasy or Reality,” will be in Thrust Theater, 2314 S. Floyd St. Ticket sales will benefit UofL’s African American Theatre Program (AATP).
The troupe explores how dance and movement can create energy in its student- and faculty-choreographed shows. Director Brian Martin, an ASU theater professor, is an AATP alumnus.
“The energy in this group’s performance comes from an intense passion for dance,” said Deana Thomas, AATP director. “Their fast-paced rhythms are combined with slow, lyrical movements to showcase their diverse styles and creativity.”
The event is part of a kickoff celebration to mark the AATP’s 20th anniversary season.
Since the program launched in 1993, AATP has produced nine premieres, performed in South Africa and China and made multiple appearances in the United States. UofL’s program is the nation’s only university African American program to be fully integrated into the theater arts curriculum; it offers a graduate certificate in African American theater.
Tickets for “Metamorphosis: Fantasy or Reality” are $10 per person. A ticket purchase includes a free dance workshop which troupe members will give from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 6 for youths age seven to 18.
