UofL junior Suraj Kannan has won a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, an award that provides up to $7,500 for scholars planning a career in science, math or engineering.

The biochemistry and math major will use the scholarship to pursue doctorate degrees in philosophy and medicine with a focus on heart tissue regeneration.

“Regenerative medicine will without a doubt be the medical revolution of the 21st century,” Kannan said. “I see this scholarship as the first step in what will hopefully be a long career in pursuing regenerative medicine research.”

UofL is doing its part to “encourage more students to choose careers in math, science and engineering, so we are especially excited about this Goldwater scholarship,” said UofL President James Ramsey. “Suraj is an extraordinary student who is motivated to make a difference in the world. We’re proud of him.”

Kannan was one of 271 U.S. scholars to receive the scholarship. The Louisville native and 2010 graduate of duPont Manual High School, is a Grawemeyer Scholar who has won awards for excellence in mathematics.
