Eastern Parkway to be shut down Dec. 16; bridge to be closed until late spring

by UofL Today last modified Dec 14, 2009 02:28 PM

Eastern Parkway from Third Street to the Speed School entrance will be closed Dec. 16 while crews pave and stripe that section of the road.

Access to the Speed parking lot will be through Brook Street via Warnock Street.

If weather does not permit paving on the 16th, the crews will pave on the next workday that weather does permit and the road will be closed that day.

Completion of paving and striping will mark the end of significant construction on the west end of Eastern Parkway, with only landscaping and some minor work remaining. It will be open for two-way traffic once the one-day shutdown is completed.

However, the Eastern Parkway bridge will be closed much longer than originally scheduled.

Crews tearing out the old bridge structure found significant damage over the CSX railroad tracks that previously was undetectable. That additional damage, plus the winter temperatures that prevent the pouring of concrete, mean that Eastern Parkway from the Speed School entrance east to Hahn Street will remain closed; the project completion date now is June 2010.
