Charting Our Course

Our mandate from the people of Kentucky is that we achieve status as a premier metropolitan research university. Given eleven budget cuts in the past eleven years and our quest to achieve this vision, the University of Louisville has embarked upon a bold endeavor to raise $750 million in private support by 2013. While we have already made significant progress toward this unprecedented goal, much work lies ahead of us.

Throughout this capital campaign – the first since 1997 – we are committed to increasing our engagement with every stakeholder who values the university and its impact on our collective future. This initiative offers us the opportunity to pursue a more diversified funding strategy to fulfill our role in improving the city, region and state.

Philanthropic priorities have been established by university leadership and the deans of our schools and colleges, the libraries and athletics in direct correlation with the five goals as articulated in the 2020 Plan: educational excellence; research, scholarship and creative activity; community engagement; diversity, opportunity and social justice; and creative and responsible stewardship.

It’s also our mission to ensure the campaign strengthens the university’s capacities to recruit and retain outstanding faculty who are critical to UofL’s success in teaching, research and outreach. We will, therefore, focus resources on educational programs and capital expenditures that are vital to ensuring the national competitiveness of our graduates and creating an environment conducive to living, learning and working. At its core, this campaign will seek funding that will make an education at UofL more accessible to greater numbers of deserving individuals and reduce their level of indebtedness upon graduation to the greatest extent possible.

In closing, it is the unwavering determination of our students, the superior talent and passion of our faculty, the perpetual quest for solutions by our researchers and the pride and fortitude of our community that will make the transformation of our university a reality. Theirs are the voices that encourage us to do more, be more and achieve more.

Sincerely,

Jim
