A Campaign for the Citizens' University

Charting Our Course is the most ambitious fundraising effort ever undertaken by the University of Louisville. Join us in keeping UofL as an institution of influence.

We have in our sights, and nearly in our grasp, the reality of being a university that is envied as a leader in the evolution of higher education. We have the talent. We have the ambition and the plan. What we need is the full complement of resources necessary to achieve our goals. Kentucky deserves a major urban university that drives the educational, research, social and artistic climates of the community. Our course is charted. Our time is now.

Embracing the vision

On the evening of November 10, hundreds of individuals came together to formally launch Charting Our Course: The Campaign for Kentucky’s Premier Metropolitan Research University. At the event, President Ramsey and Provost Willihnghanz asked alumni and friends to join as partners and to invest in the University of Louisville for the future of our community and state. Lindy Street spoke about the Brown Cancer Center, extolling the professionalism, quality of care and compassion of its staff. Monica Marks, UofL’s first female Rhodes Scholar, was brought to the audience via Skype from England, where she is currently studying. And, PNC Regional President Chuck Denny defined the imperative of investment in UofL as the region’s most important resource in making the community competitive in a global environment. Guests also watched a video that tells the story in compelling terms about the value of UofL as an institution of higher education, a provider of critical health services and research, and one of the leading economic drivers in the region. The UofL Jazz Ensemble and the world-renowned Cardinal Singers – led by Kent Hatteberg, Director of Choral Studies, and Mike Tracy, Director of Jazz Studies – provided entertainment for the evening.

Setting our goals

Long before Charting Our Course was launched, the leaders of each UofL school, college, department, division and program were asked to identify targeted goals and priorities. Those plans are available in greater detail in the Campus Roundup section. When reviewing their plans and initiatives, you will notice consistent strategies across the University that leverage current strengths with new resources to elevate UofL to national prominence – and beyond.

Academic support, scholarships and programs With resources from Charting Our Course, we will provide our students with a rewarding and powerful educational experience both within and outside the classroom through a variety of curricular, social and cultural programs. By sustaining and expanding student scholarships, we’ll have the opportunity to provide fair and equitable access to a UofL education and ensure that students will be able to take advantage of superior academic programs. Students will be engaged in ways that enhance their lives, affording all of them – regardless of their economic circumstances – opportunities for exceptional learning experiences.

Excellence in faculty teaching and research Much like the world of business, the world of higher education is a highly competitive environment. Through this campaign, and those that follow, private support will be sought for endowed positions in each of the academic units, as well as research and program support. We expect that nearly $235 million will be raised for research-based faculty. A total of $50 million will be raised across the University to attract and retain the best teaching faculty for the betterment of our students and the region’s graduates.

Athletic Prominence Athletics has been, and will continue to be, an important part of college life at UofL. Through past success, athletic programs have become deeply embedded not just in the life of the school, but also the life of the community. Our athletic teams attract more than 500,000 supporters in attendance each year, generating significant economic value to the community and serving as a source of community pride. In addition to the Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium renovation and participation in the KFC Yum! Center, the most pressing athletic needs are an academic center for student-athletes, the continued renovation of facilities and endowed scholarships. Since the early stages of the campaign, our athletics program has raised more than $95 million. Most of these funds will provide scholarship support and underwrite the debt for the stadium expansion.

The Fund for UofL, annual program and operating support UofL will continue to seek unrestricted support for the critical operations of our academic units and the libraries through our annual giving program. The Fund for UofL provides invaluable and flexible support for academic and programmatic leadership and represents a powerful complement to existing institutional resources. For a significant number of alumni and friends, giving through The Fund for UofL will be the primary means by which they will participate in the Charting Our Course campaign. Gifts realized through The Fund for UofL over the life of the campaign will be incorporated and celebrated as an integral part of the overall commitment totals for this historic effort.

Ways to give

Endowment An endowed gift has a long-term impact because the principal remains intact to earn investment income in perpetuity. UofL spends 5.5% of an endowed fund’s market value annually, reinvesting the remainder of its capital growth income and thus increasing the value of the fund. As the endowed account grows, more funds are made available to support scholarships, or other areas specified by the donor. Endowed gifts typically start at $10,000–$25,000 for endowed scholarships and $1 million for endowed professorships and chairs.

Naming Opportunities Naming opportunities provide the most prestigious recognition possible for your philanthropic commitment. A donor’s or their designee’s name can become permanently associated with a school or college, a center or institute, a department or program, an endowed chair, an endowed professorship, an endowed fellowship, an endowed scholarship and university facilities. Planned Giving Planned gifts provide donors with excellent benefits, including life income, continued use of gift property, an avoidance of capital gains tax and immediate income tax deduction. Some planned gifts, such as bequests, provide gift and estate tax savings. To establish a planned gift, contact James Eriksen, Director of Planned Giving, at 502.852.6954 or

  • Bequests Retain use of your assets to reflect your philanthropic and financial goals through a provision in your will.
  • Charitable Annuity Transfer cash or appreciated property to UofL in exchange for our promise to pay you fixed income (at rates based on your age) for the rest of your life. In these economic times, this is equally beneficial for you and the University.
  • Charitable Lead Trust Transfer cash or property to fund a lead trust that makes gifts to UofL for a number of years. You receive a charitable deduction for the gift and your family receives the remainder at substantial tax savings.
  • Life Insurance Depending on the type of policy you donate, you may receive an up-front income tax deduction and any future premium payments may also be tax-deductible.
  • Bargain Sale of real property Sell your property to the University for less than fair market value, and you receive the cash and a charitable deduction for the difference between the market value and the purchase price.

Fund for UofL The Fund for UofL is the annual giving program for UofL alumni and friends. Annual support helps keep the University affordable for students, provides opportunities for learning and discovery, supplies a steady source of support for academic programs and ensures UofL’s progress as a major metropolitan research university. Helping us reach the next level

To accomplish our goal of becoming a premier metropolitan research university, we need you as a partner. Your gifts support scholarships and awards, faculty and research, scientific discoveries and creative endeavors, technology and capital improvements, and community partnerships that cannot be funded by state and tuition support alone. The compass rose, embedded in the first floor of Grawemeyer Hall and replicated in its dome, will be used throughout the campaign as a way to report the campaign’s progress. As you can see, we’re already more than halfway to the goal, but your support is imperative if we are to succeed in making UofL the school of choice for students, faculty and researchers.
