Laboratory equipment, such as fume hood, refrigerator, freezer, centrifuge, autoclave, etc., that may be contaminated with biological, radiological and/or chemical hazards must be properly decontaminated prior to service or movement by Physical Plant personnel from the laboratory for surplus, repair, disposal, or relocation.  The Principal Investigator is responsible for ensuring that DEHS is contacted prior to movement or service of laboratory equipment for the purpose of verifying and documenting that the appropriate decontamination has been completed.  University personnel can review this procedure and submit a DEHS "Equipment Release" form via DEHS website.

Items that are unacceptable for Surplus Property include:

  • Chemicals
  • Radioactive material
  • Items containing radioactive sources
  • Mercury containing device (i.e. thermometer, manometer, sphygmomanometer, barometer, etc.)
  • Pharmaceutical products

For disposal of these items, contact DEHS at 852-2956 or 852-6670, or via email at dehsubm@louisville.edu .
