IMPORTANT INFORMATIONNational Clearinghouse Breach Affects Few UofL StudentsUofL recently received notice from the National Student Clearinghouse that information for some of our students and former students was included in a nationwide security breach that affected higher education and K-12 institutions throughout the United States. According to NSC, sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth and student ID numbers, was compromised for only 17 current and former UofL students. Those individuals already have been notified by the university and will receive additional detail from NSC. Most U.S. higher education institutions use the clearinghouse’s educational reporting, research, data and transcript ordering services. The data breach was related to their use of the MOVEit Transfer tool used by many organizations to transfer data. More than 22,000 UofL student records including name and contact information were included in the breach, but only the 17 previously mentioned personal files were potentially compromised. Those individuals will be offered free credit monitoring for one year. Renter’s InsuranceIn accordance with the University Housing License Agreement, we recommend that all residents purchase renter’s insurance. While we do not require residents to purchase this additional insurance, we encourage them to purchase this form of insurance due to the many benefits it provides, should the need arise.
