In the December 2, 2016 Issue:

1. **IMPORTANT Computer Virus Information**

There has been an increase recently in computer malware being distributed via university email and over the internet.  This malware seems to be triggered by opening attachments, clicking on links within emails or visiting unsafe web sites.
The specific malware we have seen is referred to as encryption ransomware. After being infected you receive a note that all your files have been encrypted and that they can only be restored by paying a ransom. The bottom line is all your files are gone  - and not recoverable.
What you can do to protect your files:
1.  Be careful – Do not open attachments  or click on links within emails from strange names or addresses you do not recognize. If the email looks suspicious  don’t take a chance. When it doubt don’t open any attachment or click on a link in the email. If it has a name call the person first. If it does not have a name that’s a sure sign something is not right.  Call the IT Helpdesk (852-7997) if you have questions about any suspicious  email.
2.  BACK UP YOUR DATA – BACK UP YOUR DATA  - BACK UP YOUR DATA -  Back up your data on an external device that does not remain attached to your computer. This is a normal best practice and can take just a few minutes a week. Use extremal drives or flash drives. Using network drives is not always helpful because if they are accessible to your computer they are accessible to the malware.
