University Housing and the Resident Experience

The Host: Hello everybody and welcome back to the Student Affairs Podcasts. My name is Daniel Pinto. I am a fifth-year senior, biology major and I will be your host today.

In this episode, we will be talking about campus housing and what the benefits are of living on campus. I am very excited to bring you this interview with Dr. Tom Hardy, Executive Director of University Housing and the Resident Experience. Welcome, Dr. Hardy.

Tom Hardy: Hello everyone! Thank you for inviting me. It is a pleasure to share with you what campus housing brings to our students.

The Host: The first question I would like you to ask is why should students live on campus?

Tom Hardy: Students at UofL who live on campus have a myriad of support in the areas of academics and social experiences that help them to succeed in progressing and eventually graduating over their off-campus peers. They develop lifelong friendships, participate in living learning environments not available to commuters, and avoid the issues of broken-down cars and traffic leading to them missing class. Students on campus have a positive "experience" with UofL while most commuters just go to school and have no connection with the campus.

The Host: That is good to know. And what does University Housing offer?

Tom Hardy: Our environment provides a lot more than a room. We have a thriving community where classrooms are within the halls, where late night study sessions or Jenga games happen spontaneously. Where you meet friends and go to dinner or to a sports event together. We are a community that supports each other for mutual success.

The Host: Wow, classrooms for late night study sessions sounds like you provide a lot of assistance to the students, but what if I am not a freshman anymore, would University Housing still be a good option for me?

Tom Hardy: Not a problem, we house every class designation within the halls. We are not only freshman and have a sophomore residency program to provide support at that level as well. Our halls have different styles, from traditional rooms, to suites, to apartments. We have a place for every student who desires one!

The Host: Thank you, Dr. Hardy, for sharing a little bit about University Housing I bet there are a lot of more interesting topics that we can talk about. I think it is good for our students to be aware of University Housing.
