2024 Ambassadors with UofL SighSPHIS Ambassadors

The UofL SPHIS Ambassadors will represent the school at various events and opportunities throughout the academic year. The goal of the Ambassadors is to provide prospective and currently enrolled students first-hand information about UofL SPHIS.  In sharing their experiences, ambassadors hope to ease the transition of a new student into life at the University of Louisville School of Public Health & Information Sciences and share with them the many wonderful opportunities that await.

International Study Awards

SPHIS student Yelena Bagdasaryan has earned a Boren Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, which funds study abroad opportunities for U.S. students in regions critical to U.S. national security interests. The award includes funding of up to $25,000 and a one-year work requirement with the federal government after returning to the U.S.

The scholarship enables recipients to spend up to one academic year in intensive cultural and language immersion. Bagdasaryan will intensively study Czech at Charles University in Prague and complete an international communications internship at Caritas Czech Republic, a non-governmental organization, from September through June 2025.

Bagdasaryan is a McConnell Scholar studying public health and political science. After returning from the Czech Republic, Bagdasaryan will attend Johns Hopkins University for a master’s in public health.

Also, public health sophomore Saadhavi Maskey received a Fulbright US-UK Summer Institute Award. Participants participate in a 3-4 week program at a United Kingdom (UK) university and have the opportunity to explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK. Read more.


Student in the News

Tiff Haub, MS, LAT, ATC, graduate student in the MS in Health Administration program and director of Sports Health at Norton Healthcare, was invited to share her expertise during two recent interviews. On the “Wrap It Up: Sports Medicine” podcast, Haub discussed the logistics and importance of offering medical care at Churchill Downs. In an article published in NATA News, the monthly magazine of the National Athletic Training Association, Haub described the work being done to elevate jockey healthcare at the local and national levels. Listen to the podcast.


Recent Publication

Irina Kondaurova, doctoral student in the Dept. of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, contributed to an article published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in SoutheastCon 2024, titled, “Multi-Joint Adaptive Motion Imitation in Robot-Assisted Physiotherapy with Dynamic Time Warping and Recurrent Neural Networks.” They presented an innovative modular framework for Adaptive Motion Imitation in the context of multi-joint robot-assisted physiotherapy.  The results demonstrated the validity of the proposed framework in adapting the behavior of the robot according to the subject's imitation abilities. Additional Louisville Automation and Robotics Research Institute authors include Ali Ashary, Madan M. Rayguru, Payman Sharafian Ardakani, and Dan O. Popa. Read more.


Accolades

Smriti Maskey, doctoral student in the Dept. of Epidemiology and Population Health, was invited to serve on the Society for Epidemiologic Research Mentoring Committee for a three-year term beginning July 2024. Learn more about the committee.

JulieAnn Mottern, PT, DPT, OCS, an online MS in Health Administration student, was recognized for her volunteerism with the United Services Organizations (USO) and U.S. Army. She received the USO Volunteer of the Month in March 2024, the USO Bronze Mission Award for Outstanding Volunteer Performance, and was a nominee for the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Family Member Volunteer of the Year award.
