CIK Spring 2022 Update
Establishing transdisciplinary collaborations for research and data analytics is essential to improving the health and wellbeing of Kentuckians. Researchers in the Commonwealth Institute of Kentucky (CIK) also seek opportunities to share key findings with key stakeholders in order to inform policy and practice. Most recently, CIK researchers have participated in panel discussions with government officials and published an issue brief that will be presented at a statewide conference.
In February 2022, Dr. Liza Creel, PhD, MPH, CIK Director, Associate Professor in the Department of Health Management and Systems Sciences, participated in a panel discussion on substance use in Kentucky. The panel was organized by Volunteers of America Mid-States. Dr. Creel discussed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded SHERO (Strengthening Health Equity in Recovery Outcomes) Study, which explores cross-sector alignment among organizations serving pregnant and parenting women in recovery. She said, “It was an honor to sit alongside US Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Dr. Rahul Gupta, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy at the White House, and many other committed leaders in Kentucky and Louisville. I am inspired by our collective efforts to study, invest in, and deliver better services, supports, and systems for people and families impacted by substance use.”
The Commonwealth Institute of Kentucky (CIK) also recently has expanded its work to include a focus on maternal and child health issues in Louisville and across Kentucky. CIK released an issue brief summarizing current data and initiatives underway in Kentucky to address maternal mortality. Melissa Eggen, Senior Policy Analyst, will be presenting on the brief at a panel presentation during the 2022 Kentuckiana Health Collaborative Conference on April 12-13 and a poster presentation at the Kentucky Public Health Association Annual Conference on April 20-22.
