Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) Program

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) curriculum is the fifth year of the M.E. Department's integrated B.S./M.Eng. program of study.  The graduate coursework in the program emphasizes professional practice and the solution of contemporary engineering problems; the department's Master of Science (M.S.) program retains more of a specialized research focus.

 

Admission

Admission to the Mechanical Engineering M.Eng. program requires completion of the M.E. Department's B.S. program with a cumulative grade-point average of 2.50/4.0 for all prior academic undergraduate coursework.

A Higher Studies application forms for the M.Eng. degrees may be found here. Students should submit their application when within one semester of completing the B.S. program requirements.

 

Curriculum Requirements

The M.Eng. program requires 30 hours of graduate coursework. Students satisfy satisfy the program's specialization outcome by completing either completing a thesis option or a structured research option.

  • Thesis Option 24 hours of ME or non-ME 500/600 level electives, with a minimum of 12 hours at the 600-level and a maximum of 6 non-ME hours, 6 hours of ME 690 Master of Science Thesis in Mechanical Engineering, and successful defense of the M.S. thesis
  • Structured Research Option 27 hours of ME or non-ME 500/600 level electives with a minimum of 12 hours at the 600-level and a maximum of 6 non-ME hours, and successful completion of ME 645 Structured Research Project.

The thesis-option and structured research option both require 30 semester hours of coursework. Thesis hours or non-ME courses must be approved by the student's academic advisor.
