Brown-Forman INSPIRE summer enrichment program

The Program

INSPIRE is an acronym for Increasing Student Preparedness and Interest in the Requisites for Engineering. It is a summer enrichment program designed to provide an introduction to engineering to students historically under-represented in the engineering field. The program is sponsored by Brown-Forman. Those targeted for the program include African American, Hispanic, Native American and female students who attend Louisville-area public or private high schools, but the program is open to all.

A certificate will be presented to each student who successfully completes the program.

The Curriculum

The Brown-Forman INSPIRE summer enrichment program will be held at the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School June 19-June 29, 2017. The program runs Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Along with introducing the high school students to various aspects of technology and fields of engineering, INSPIRE assists the students in identifying career interests and personality profiles. Over the years, the program has included field trips to area industries such as General Electric Appliance Park, LG&E, MSD and Brown-Forman.

There is no cost for students to participate in the program, but they have to provide their own transportation to the campus each day.

The Participants

2012 Brown-Forman INSPIRE participants

Most applicants will be high school students historically under-represented in the engineering field. Because it is a non-residential program, most students will be from the Louisville metropolitan area.  Students must complete a program application and must be recommended by school personnel such as well as a math or science teacher.  Participants will be selected by the Program Director according to the following criteria:

    • Above-average academic record
    • Above average math and science grades
    • School recommendations
    • Personal essay/statement of interest
    • Commitment to participate in the entire program

The Application Process

Applications must include your recent high school transcript, a biographical essay and a recommendation for either your math or science teacher or guidance counselor. Download the Teacher Recommendation Form prior to applying online. Only fully completed applications will be accepted and must be submitted online.

Applications for the 2017 Brown-Forman INSPIRE program are now being accepted. Deadline for submitting applications is May 1st and will be notified the last week of May.
