Welcome to ECE!
by Dr. Bruce W. Alphenaar, Professor and ECE Chair

Welcome to the University of Louisville Electrical and Computer Engineering Department! The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department plays an essential role in the mission of the J. B. Speed School of Engineering and is committed to meeting the educational needs of our students through the synergy of teaching, research, and preparation for life-long learing and productive professional careers.

The ECE web site provides you with an inside look at some of our activities. We encourage you to browse and learn about our educational philosophy and research profile, as well as our ECE faculty and students. We offer insights into undergraduate and graduate curricula, faculty interests, and research opportunities - in other words, resources you can utilize to discover and reach your ultimate potential as an ECE student

The ECE Department offers a unique five-year degree through its Master of Engineering program. Our practice-oriented curriculum includes a mandatory capstone design project course and three-semester cooperative work experience. The ECE Department also offers Bachelors of Science, Master of Science, and Doctoral in Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Sixteen departmental faculty, several lecturers, associate and adjunct faculty aided by seven staff members support our mission to provide our students with an up-to-date and high-quality electrical engineering education.

Our research and teaching laboratories are continuously being upgraded. For students ready for more advanced courses and research, we offer the class 100 micro-fabrication cleanroom, the image processing and computer vision laboratory, the nanotechnology laboratory, the autonomous robots laboratory, and many others. Our faculty are accomplished leaders in several fields including computational intelligence, computer vision, microelectronic devices and nanotechnology. The faculty has received many awards and professional honors as well as invited to participate in national committees and review panels. While very active in their research, you will find that our faculty are deeply committed to, and involved with, the education of our students.

If you are interested in becoming an electrical engineer, we can offer you a host of opportunities and prepare you for a very successful career. The ECE faculty and I look forward to the day when you join us as a member of the engineering profession. I would be delighted to hear from you or introduce myself during your campus visit!
