Joel Fried named new CHE Chair
Dr. Joel R. Fried has been selected as the next Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department. He will also be appointed as a Professor of Chemical Engineering. Dr. Fried joins us from the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Florida State University/Florida A&M University, where he is currently Professor and Chair.
He is an internationally recognized authority in the area of polymer science and engineering, and was formerly the Wright Brothers Institute Endowed Chair in Nanomaterials at the University of Dayton. Prior to that Dr. Fried had a distinguished tenure as a teacher, researcher and administrator at the University of Cincinnati, where he was Director of the Ohio Molecular Computation and Simulation Network and Center for Computer-Aided Molecular Design, and held faculty appointments both in Chemical Engineering and Genome Science. Dr. Fried has an outstanding record of scholarship and graduate education. He has served as dissertation advisor for 44 MS and PhD students and has mentored 9 postdoctoral scholars. He is the author of Polymer Science and Technology, a widely used textbook in the field.
Dr. Fired holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a bachelor’s degree in Biology, both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He also holds two master’s degrees, one in Polymer Science from the University of Massachusetts and the other in Chemical Engineering from RPI. Dr. Fried earned his doctorate in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts.
