Graduate Degrees and Programs

The J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville offers a spectrum of graduate programs at the Ph.D. and Master of Science levels. Faculty bring to the classroom extensive instructional and research experience, which contribute to the dynamic learning experience that is found in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering. Students enrolled in the graduate programs have access to world-class instructional and research facilities, including the University of Louisville's research building, the Shumaker Research Building.

Master of Engineering Admissions

  • A J.B. Speed School of Engineering student interested in the School of Engineering's five-year, integrated Master of Engineering programs must complete the MEng Graduate Studies application and submit it to his/her department for approval. The Registrar matriculates the student into the fifth year of the M. Eng. program upon departmental approval.
  • A returning J.B. Speed School of Engineering student who has been out for more than two years must complete the Online Graduate Application for Admissions.  In the Comment section of the application list the MEng program and major department.
  • Students admitted to the fifth year of the Speed School of Engineering's five-year, integrated Master of Engineering program will be charged the same tuition rate as undergraduate students.
  • Students from outside the J.B. Speed School of Engineering/University of Louisville interested in the MEng program in Engineering Management should apply via the Graduate School Application process via the on-line application process.  In the Comment section of the application list the MEng as the intended degree program and Engineering Management as the intended major.  Applicants are required to submit an application fee of $60.00 (US currency), two letters of recommendations, official final copies of all college/university transcripts and meet the departmental minimum 2.50/4.00 GPA requirement.

Master of Science Admissions

Students who possess an undergraduate degree from an institution outside the University of Louisville or students who possess a non-engineering undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville who desire to pursue a Master’s degree from the J. B. Speed School of Engineering should apply to the Master of Science degree program.

  • Apply to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies/University of Louisville via the on-line application process Application fee: $60.00 (US currency)
  • Contact all previous college and universities attended and have those institutions send final official transcripts to:

  • Graduate admissions must receive official test scores for the GRE.  International students must also demonstrate English proficiency by supplying official TOEFL or IELTS exam results.  Student score reports for any exam are not acceptable.  Check with your department for minimum score requirements.
  • Submit at least two (2) letters of recommendation using either the paper method or using the on-line letter of recommendation option.  Check with your department to see if additional letters of recommendation are required.
  • Additional requirements: Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and Chemical Engineering require students to submit a personal statement/statement of purpose as part of the application process.  The statement should be submitted to the graduate admissions office.  Contact your department for more information.

 

Doctor of Philosophy Admissions

The J. B. Speed School of Engineering offers the PhD degree is six disciplines: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.  To apply for one of the PhD programs, applicants should do the following:

  • Apply to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies/University of Louisville via the on-line application process Application fee: $60.00 (US currency)
  • Contact all previous college and universities attended and have those institutions send final official transcripts to:

International Students

Applications for international students may take several months to process, so international students are urged to submit complete application materials as early as possible. Materials should be received by the University at least 12 weeks prior to the beginning of classes in the semester for which admission is sought. Please refer to the following priority application deadlines:

  • May 1 Fall Semester Term (begins late August)
  • November 1 Spring Semester Term (begins early January)
  • March 1 Summer (short terms with beginning dates in May, June or July)

International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from either the TOEFL exam or the IELTS exam in addition to GRE scores.

The University offers many services to international students. The International Center provides orientation programs on campus, personal counseling, immigration advisement and issuance of immigration documents required for student/scholar visas.
