Celebremos la cultura hispánica

Each September, the Spanish Section of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages organizes a series of event to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month at the campus.  The list of activities includes a launching party celebrated close to September 15  in the Humanities Building Quad where faculty, student and students organizations related to the department setup exhibits and display to showcase our myriad of programs.  We offer food, fun and entertainment, including life music.  We also organize a Latin American Film Festival that runs for a few weeks during this time.  And the celebration ends with the week long commemoration of the Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead) instituted in 2001. This event takes place in the Ekstrom Library and allows our students to experience and become acquainted with the way Hispanic peoples view and celebrate dead.  We set up Day of the Dead altars in honor of people close to us, or celebrities who have passed away.  The students display and set up barriletes (kites) just like people in Guatemala do to pay homage to their ancestors, relatives and close ones who have left this world.
