Macey Mayes

ETSCORN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AWARD

UofL senior Macey Mayes has been awarded a 2017 Etscorn International Summer Research Award. UofL awards the $5,000 Irvin F. and Alice S. Etscorn International Summer Research Award to promising undergraduates interested in conducting international research over the summer.

Mayes will travel to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to research how LGBTQ Thais negotiate their identities.

“With this award, I will have an experience that will provide me a greater understanding of the culture and lifestyles of the people of Thailand. This trip will contribute in a meaningful way to the research and studies I have already pursued and will play an essential role in ensuring I will accomplish my future goals, but I most look forward to the ways in which this time aboard will push me intellectually and personally—as both a student and as a global citizen.”

Inspired By

“Throughout the past three years, Dr. Anne Caldwell and Professor Mike Fowler have been constant sources of encouragement, wisdom, and guidance during my academic and personal journey at UofL. Dr. Caldwell’s brilliance and astuteness is unparalleled and I am fortunate that she has served as such an invaluable academic mentor for my interest in political theory, sexuality and gender studies. She pushes me to ask tough questions and always seems to find truly insightful and challenging pieces of literature to recommend. Professor Fowler has become a trusted counselor whose sound advice and wisdom knows no bounds. His command of the fields of negotiation and international relations has been so beneficial to me, and to all those he teaches. He has gifted me with instrumental interpersonal skills and has been one of the biggest facilitators of my growth as a scholar and as a person.”
