Breast Cancer Alliance Exceptional Project Grants

Brief Synopsis from Sponsor: Breast Cancer Alliance invites clinical doctors and research scientists at any stage of their careers whose primary focus is breast cancer to apply for an Exceptional Project Grant. This award recognizes creative, unique and innovative research and is open to applicants at institutions throughout the contiguous United States. This is a one year grant for a total of $100,000.

Prior to submission of a formal grant proposal, the BCA requires a one-page Letter of Intent (LOI) and a separate CV. For 2021 grants, those letters will be due on April 5, 2020, and should be email to researchgrants@breastcanceralliance.org. The LOI must contain the applicant’s name, job title and institution at the top of the page, and the applicant’s contact information. The document should state the project title and hypothesis, outline the research aim(s) and methods, and include a brief discussion of the project’s potential impact. The CV should be in the current NIH biosketch format.

Applicants will be informed by mid-May 2020 whether they have been invited to proceed with a formal application.

Maximum Award Amount:  This is a one year grant for a total of $100,000.

Be aware: BCA will accept a maximum of 2 LOIs per institution. UofL will decide which to submit via an internal application process determined by peer review.

Anyone interested in submitting for this program must first submit an internal application to with the opportunity title in the subject line and copying the applicable research dean, by 5 p.m. on the date listed above, including the following materials:

  • A summary of the proposal (maximum two pages);
  • A paragraph describing why you would be the most competitive candidate for this program;
  • Your current curriculum vitae;
  • A cover page that contains:
    • The name of this funding opportunity and title of your proposal;
    • Your name, position, and UofL office contact information;
    • Collaborator names, positions, and institutions (if applicable).

Reviewers will judge proposals as they would in any peer review process, so PIs are urged to put forward competitive internal proposals. Along with typical criteria, reviewers will evaluate internal proposals based on their fit with the sponsor’s articulated goals and criteria as well as the UofL strategic goals.
